Soap without coconut: how to read a bar, a body wash and a hand soap
Soap names its own fat: sodium cocoate is coconut, sodium olivate is olive, sodium tallowate is beef fat. Which bars and washes list coconut, the 'beauty bars' that aren't soap at all, why castile and Marseille don't mean olive, and the soaps in our registry with no coconut listed.

Soap is the one product in the bathroom that tells you what it was made from, if you know how to read it. A true soap is a fat reacted with lye, and the ingredient name keeps the fat in it.
That makes soap easier than shampoo. It is also where coconut is most at home: coconut oil is one of the classic soap fats, and it is in bars sold as castile, as Marseille, as goat's milk and as "natural".
The names
In a true soap, the first word is the alkali and the second is the fat [1, 2]:
| On the label | The fat it was made from |
|---|---|
| Sodium cocoate, potassium cocoate | Coconut oil |
| Coconut acid | The fatty acids of coconut oil |
| Sodium palm kernelate, palm kernel acid | Palm kernel oil |
| Sodium palmate | Palm oil |
| Sodium tallowate | Beef fat |
| Sodium olivate, potassium olivate | Olive oil |
| Sodium laurate | Lauric acid, commonly isolated from coconut oil [1]; the label doesn't say |
| Sodium stearate | Stearic acid, from tallow or from vegetable oils [1]; the label doesn't say |
Handmade soaps often write it the long way instead: "saponified oils of…" followed by the plants. Then you are looking for Cocos nucifera, which is coconut. Elaeis guineensis is the oil palm and Olea europaea is olive.
About palm kernel. Palm kernel oil is not coconut. It is the closest thing to it chemically, which is why soapmakers swap one for the other, but it comes from a different plant, and we found no published case of allergy to it. Coconut and palm oil has the evidence.
Many "soaps" are not soap
Look at what the front of the pack calls itself. "Beauty bar", "cleansing bar" and "body wash" are not accidents of marketing.
In the United States, a product only counts as soap if it is made mainly of the alkali salts of fatty acids and is sold only as soap. If it contains synthetic detergents, it is legally a cosmetic. The FDA's own words: "Today there are very few true soaps on the market" [3].
The detergent bars are built on the same coconut chemistry as shampoo:
- Dove Beauty Bar: sodium lauroyl isethionate first, then stearic acid, lauric acid, and further down cocamidopropyl betaine [4]
- Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar: sodium cocoyl isethionate first, then sodium tallowate and sodium cocoate, and "may also contain sodium palm kernelate" [4]
- CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser Bar: sodium cocoyl isethionate first, with cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine and caprylic/capric triglyceride [4]
Sodium cocoyl isethionate is made with coconut fatty acid, and the "lauroyl" version with lauric acid [5]. The bars sold as the gentle choice for sensitive skin are, for this allergy, the ones with the most coconut-derived ingredients in them.
What ordinary bars list
- Dial Gold: soap (sodium palmate, sodium cocoate, sodium palm kernelate), and also coconut acid [6]
- Irish Spring antibacterial and Protex: "sodium laurate/linoleate/oleate/palmitate" [6]
The second kind is worth noticing. The soap is named by its fatty acids instead of its oil, so the word coco never appears. Lauric acid is the fatty acid coconut and palm kernel oil are richest in. Which of the two it came from, the label doesn't say.
Body wash and liquid hand soap
These are detergent products, closer to shampoo than to soap.
- Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash: cocamidopropyl betaine is the second ingredient after water, followed by lauric acid, sodium lauroyl glycinate and sodium lauroyl isethionate [7]
- Softsoap antibacterial hand soap: lauramidopropylamine oxide, cocamide MEA [7]
- Dial Gold antibacterial hand soap: lauramine oxide, lauramidopropylamine oxide, cocamide MEA [7]
Every baby wash line in our registry lists cocamidopropyl betaine. The body washes we've read.
The hand soap in a public bathroom, an office or a restaurant comes out of a dispenser with no ingredient list on it. If yours is a contact allergy and your hands are where it shows, that is a place to look. Carrying your own small bar is the simple way round it.
Castile, Marseille and Aleppo
Traditional names sound like a guarantee. Only one of the three tells you much.
Castile. The dictionary meaning is a soap made from olive oil [8]. In practice, the best-known "pure-castile" soaps list coconut oil first: both the liquid [9] and the bar in our registry.
Marseille. The specification that Marseille soapmakers filed for the name allows four oils: olive, olive pomace, palm and copra, which is coconut. It requires a minimum of 5% olive oil [10]. A cube of savon de Marseille can be made mostly of coconut and palm.
Aleppo. UNESCO, which has recognised the craft, describes it as made from olive oil and laurel oil [11]. That is the tradition; nothing stops a seller using the name on something else, so read the list here too.
Handmade and "natural" soap
Small-batch soap is not a way around coconut. One of the goat's milk soaps in our registry lists saponified coconut, olive, palm and castor oils. See it.
"Melt and pour" bases, which crafters buy ready-made and remould, are worth knowing about too. The published specification for one widely sold transparent base includes sodium laurate, lauryl glucoside and polyglyceryl-10 caprylate [12].
The advantage of a small maker is that the oils are usually listed by name, and there is a person to ask. A bar made only of olive, palm, tallow, castor or sunflower oil is a real thing; you find it by reading.
Shaving soap and cream
Lather is what coconut is used for, and shaving products want a lot of it.
- Cremo Original Shave Cream: sodium cocoyl isethionate, coconut acid [13]
- Harry's Shave Cream: Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil [13]
- A classic Italian shaving soap in our registry: coconut oil is the third ingredient
When there is no list at all
In the United States, a true soap is not regulated as a cosmetic but as a consumer product, and the agency responsible says it oversees no requirement to list a soap's ingredients on the label [2, 3]. A plain bar sold only as "soap" may legitimately carry no list.
In the European Union and the United Kingdom, soap is a cosmetic, and cosmetics must carry their list of ingredients on the packaging [14].
No list means no way to check. Leave it on the shelf.
The ones with no coconut listed
Of the soaps in our registry, three list no coconut by name, and they have the same recipe in common: olive, palm and palm kernel oils.
- Emely's Naturals Rose Bar Soap: saponified olive, palm, palm kernel and castor oils
- Emely's Naturals Choco Menta Bar Soap: the same oils, with cocoa butter
- Desert Essence Tea Tree Therapy Soap Bar: sodium palmate, sodium palm kernelate
That is what was printed on the packs we read. Recipes change, so read yours. All the soaps in the registry.
What to do
- Find the soap's own name for its fat. Cocoate and coconut acid are coconut. Olivate, tallowate and palmate are not.
- Check whether it is soap at all. "Beauty bar" and "cleansing bar" mean detergents; read them like a shampoo. How to find a shampoo without coconut lists those names.
- Don't trust castile, Marseille, olive or "natural" on the front.
- Know which allergy you have. If you react to coconut as a food, the evidence that soap matters is thin. If it is a contact allergy, soap is exactly where to look. The two kinds of coconut allergy.
- Photograph the label and the checker marks the names on this page.
