Shopping for food with a coconut allergy: plant milks, creamers, bars, oils and baby food

Aisle by aisle, what real ingredient lists say: which plant milks, creamers, dairy-free cheeses, snack bars, baby pouches and chocolates contain coconut without saying so on the front, which don't, and why 'allergy-friendly' brands don't cover coconut.

Shopping for food with a coconut allergy: plant milks, creamers, bars, oils and baby food

No list of "coconut-free brands" stays true for long. Recipes change, the same product differs between countries, and a brand that leaves coconut out of one item puts it in the next. So this page doesn't give you a list to trust. It shows you, aisle by aisle, what the labels actually say, so you can see the pattern and check faster.

Everything below was read from the manufacturers' own pages in October 2026, and it is a snapshot of US products. It tells you where to look, not what to buy.

The pattern

Coconut turns up in three situations. Learn them and most of the shop sorts itself out.

  1. When something has to be creamy without dairy. Coconut cream and coconut oil are the standard answer.
  2. When a product is sold as grain-free, paleo or keto. Coconut flour, coconut sugar and coconut oil are the usual substitutes.
  3. When a fat needs to be solid at room temperature. Coatings, fillings and "shells".

And one situation where it mostly doesn't: plain, ordinary versions of things.

Plant milks

The plain ones we checked list no coconut: Oatly Original and Barista, Silk soy and almond, Califia almond, Almond Breeze Original, Ripple, Planet Oat, Chobani Oat and Elmhurst oat [1]. Where they add a fat, it is rapeseed or sunflower oil.

The blends say so in the name: Almond Breeze "Almondmilk Coconutmilk", Califia "Toasted Coconut" [1].

The ones to watch are the richer products, where coconut is the creaminess and the name doesn't mention it:

  • Califia Farms Dairy Free Half and Half: almondmilk, coconut cream [2]
  • Silk Dairy-Free Half & Half: coconutmilk, oatmilk, coconut oil [2]

Coffee creamers

Lists coconut Lists none
Nutpods Original: water, coconut cream, almonds International Delight French Vanilla: water, sugar, palm oil
Silk Dairy-Free Half & Half Silk Sweet & Creamy Almond Creamer: sunflower oil
Califia Dairy Free Half and Half Oatly Sweet & Creamy: rapeseed oil

[2, 3]

Dairy-free cheese, butter and ice cream

This is the aisle where coconut is the rule.

  • Cheese alternatives. Violife, Daiya and Follow Your Heart cheddar-style products all list coconut oil among the first ingredients [4].
  • Butter alternatives. Miyoko's lists coconut oil first [4]. Country Crock Plant Butter lists palm, palm kernel, avocado and canola oils, and no coconut [4].
  • Frozen desserts. So Delicious's oatmilk frozen dessert and Oatly's both list coconut oil [4]. "Oat" on the front is the base, not the fat.
  • Yoghurt. Kite Hill's plain almond yoghurt lists none [4].

One of those pages adds that the coconut oil it uses "does not pose an allergen risk". That is the manufacturer's statement about its own ingredient, not something an allergy organisation has confirmed. What is and isn't known about coconut oil.

Snack and protein bars

Most mainstream bars we checked list no coconut: KIND Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt (palm kernel oil), Clif Bar Chocolate Chip (sunflower or soybean oil), Nature Valley Crunchy Oats 'n Honey (canola or sunflower oil), Quest Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, MadeGood Chocolate Chip, Larabar Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip [5].

The ones that do aren't the ones you would guess from the name:

  • Larabar Kids Chocolate Chip Cookie: coconut oil [5]
  • Simple Mills Dark Chocolate Almond Soft Baked Bars: coconut nectar and coconut oil [5]

The same brand, a different bar. That is the reason to read each one.

Cooking oils and shortening

Single-plant oils are what they say: olive, canola, sunflower, avocado, corn. In the US, a bottle sold as "vegetable oil" is usually soybean: Crisco Pure Vegetable Oil lists soybean oil and nothing else [6].

Shortening is palm or soy: Crisco lists soybean oil and palm oil, Spectrum lists palm oil [6]. We didn't find a mainstream liquid oil blend with coconut in it.

Outside the US this is less tidy. Across much of Latin America a label may say only aceite vegetal without naming the plant. The label words that leave it out.

Baby food

Baby food has moved towards dairy-free pouches, and coconut milk is how many of them get creamy.

Coconut that isn't in the product's name:

  • Once Upon a Farm Go-Go Greens smoothie: apple, banana, coconut milk [7]
  • Serenity Kids Blueberry Butternut smoothie: butternut squash, coconut cream, blueberries [7]
  • Earth's Best Peanut Butter Puffs: peanut flour, coconut oil, sea salt, and then "Contains: peanut" [7]

That last one is worth a second look. The coconut oil is in the ingredient list and absent from the allergen line. Since 2025 that is allowed in the US, and it is why the "Contains" statement can't be your check. What changed.

No coconut listed: Happy Baby Strawberry Yogis, Beech-Nut yogurt Melties, Serenity Kids Carrot & Beet Puffs (made with olive oil; its page notes that coconut runs on the same equipment at other times) [7].

Coconut allergy in babies and children covers formula, which nearly always contains coconut oil.

Chocolate

A plain chocolate bar is cocoa butter. The fillings, shells and "melt-in-the-mouth" centres are where other fats come in.

  • Lindt LINDOR truffles list vegetable oil or fat "(coconut, palm kernel)", in both the US and the UK [8].
  • Smucker's Magic Shell lists coconut oil [8].
  • Hu chocolate is sweetened with coconut sugar [8].
  • Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme and Lily's dark bar list palm and palm kernel oils, and no coconut [8].

Candy and chocolate goes through about 100 of them, including Halloween candy and ice cream bars.

Crackers, chips and popcorn

  • LesserEvil popcorn: coconut oil [9]. SkinnyPop: sunflower oil [9].
  • Siete grain-free tortilla chips: avocado oil, and coconut flour [9].
  • Simple Mills almond flour crackers: sunflower oil, no coconut [9].

"Grain-free" is the word to slow down for.

"Allergy-friendly" does not include coconut

Brands that build their whole identity on being free from allergens generally mean the legally defined ones, and coconut isn't among them.

  • Enjoy Life lists the allergens its products are free from: wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, soy, egg, sesame and several more. Coconut isn't mentioned [10].
  • Daiya describes its allergen programme as covering tree nuts "excluding coconut" [10].
  • Partake says its products contain no coconut, and that since July 2025 coconut is present in its facility and on its production line [10].

A "top allergen free" badge is not a statement about coconut. Read the list.

How to check faster

  • Read the ingredient list, not the "Contains" line.
  • Look for coconut, coconut cream, coconut milk, coconut oil, coconut flour, coconut sugar, coconut nectar, and "vegetable oil (coconut, …)".
  • Look it up before you go. Most manufacturers publish ingredients on the product page.
  • Photograph the list and the checker marks the coconut names.
