Is disodium laureth sulfosuccinate made from coconut?

It can be. The label doesn’t say.

Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate is a gentle foaming cleanser built on lauryl alcohol, the same starting point as SLS. Lauryl alcohol is made from coconut oil, palm kernel oil or petroleum, and the label never says which.

It is used in sulfate-free shampoos, baby washes and bubble baths, often alongside cocamidopropyl betaine. “Sulfate-free” on the front of a bottle says nothing about coconut.

More often than not, this one turns out to be coconut or palm kernel, so it holds a product’s verdict open on its own.

On a label: disodium laureth sulfosuccinate · laureth sulfosuccinate · laureth sulfosuccinato disodico · laureth sulfosuccinato disódico
