The front of this bottle carries four claims — SALT FREE, SULFATE FREE, GLUTEN FREE and Vegan — and the third ingredient is cocamidopropyl betaine, which is made from coconut. None of those four claims excludes coconut, and the vegan one is worth thinking about: coconut is a plant, so vegan certification actively does not rule it out. Elsewhere the same formula uses PEG-4 rapeseedamide and linoleamidopropyl — the rapeseed and safflower versions of ingredients normally made from coconut. It avoids coconut twice, then uses it in the main surfactant.
